Regional Training Center

The Regional Training Center at the Eastern Campus delivers a campus-based educational and workforce initiatives help increase credential and skill attainment, promoting successful student employment transitions.

Skills training programs are generally delivered through grant awards and partnerships at no cost to our trainees. The RTC works with the workforce development department to secure funding to deliver training in relevant job sectors to create employment opportunities for the disenfranchised populations and minorities and for Wayne county residents as a whole, depending on the resources designated allocation.

RTC is instrumental in WCCCD’s ability to respond to government, industry, and employer demands, interests, and opportunities to collaborate or partner in developing and implementing new impactful Workforce (skill training) programs for student success. Training programs are generally short-term and condensed. Operating 20-40 hours/week and completing within 2-10 weeks. Students earn valuable stackable credentials for the workforce as they learn.

Skilled training and job placement are key to economic development in southeastern Michigan.  As the demand for workforce participation in the skilled trades continues to grow, Wayne County Community College District’s Regional Training Center is poised to address the tremendous need for training that provides the demand for a qualified workforce — a demand that will only grow as infrastructure investments continue throughout Michigan.

Regional Training Center Programs

RTC Services the Construction industry with programs such as Construction Trades Training and certifying individuals in various building trades, OSHA 30, Lead Abatement, Asbestos Abatement, and first aid. Workforce training includes hands-on work experience in carpentry, masonry, and other building trades, tech math, blueprint reading, measuring, and estimating.

The RTC is partnered with the Michigan Department of Transportation, HNTB, and others to deliver the Civil Technology and Engineering program to address Federal Spending and investment in infrastructure. This public, private and educational collaborative aligns with the State’s plan to prepare Detroit and Wayne County residents for the influx of job opportunities within the infrastructure space. The plan was announced by Governor Whitmer during the address given at WCCCD in December 2021. These programs will not just include aggregate, asphalt, cement engineering, and testing. Still, they will later expand to include irrigation, sewage and water treatment, power line and power infrastructure maintenance, and other certificate training adjacent to and correlated with municipal infrastructure and energy.

Our CDL Professional Commercial Truck Drivers Course offerings include CDL Safety Training, CDL Class A License Training and testing, and Hazmat driving.

Due to new mandatory safety regulations from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), all new Commercial Driver’s License trainees receiving their permit under the February 7th Guidelines must pass a battery of 35 safety exams with 80% or more before taking their road test for licensure. As such, the RTC will train participants to pass these exams before their road and maneuvers training and testing. Thus WCCCD will offer truck driver candidates a complete program solution, including new CDL Safety Training and the CDL Class A Driver’s training, and will offer optional Hazardous materials (HAZMAT) training.

CDL: Gaining Skills Turns to Full-time Employment

Truck drivers are in high demand. In fact, according to a recent industry analysis conducted by DAT Solutions, only one truck was available for every twelve loads that awaited shipment.  As the demand for drivers continues to increase, the Regional Training Center is busy closing the skills shortage gap, conducting intense, hands-on CDL courses every eight (8) weeks.

Each summer, the RTC hosts a training camp and sports clinic for middle and high school students in partnership with the Rainbow Push Coalition. This camp includes on-campus demonstrations of robots, technology, and sports leagues in a cohort format ranging from 1-2 weeks of in-person computer programming and robotics/automation training, as well as online Computer programming training. These programs service 150 - 200 students in training sessions and over 300 annually, including our demonstrations and summer festival presentations.

Computer Trainings

Through various grants, partnerships and initiatives, we work to create new industry-related training programs to meet industry demand.  Recent new computer trainings have included DNS (Domain Name Systems) Administration, Cyber Security, and Network Administration.

Skilled Trades

The RTC works with partners such as Automotive Giants Stellantis, Ford, and GM, and other companies within the industry to develop condensed and specialized training within the skilled trades sector.  These skilled trades programs include welding, advanced manufacturing, CNC, pipefitting, diesel mechanics, and HVAC.

Entrepreneurship Training Academy (ETA)

Through a partnership with Detroit at Work, the RTC delivers online Entrepreneurship training for individuals interested in developing a business enterprise. The course exposes students to expert instructors, entrepreneurs, business consultants, and other speakers (and technical assistance) to help trainees better understand the challenges and opportunities of starting a business. This is presented as a 100% ONLINE Live Instruction class format.
