The New Northwest Campus

Larry K. Lewis Education Center

The new 32-acre Northwest Campus site located at Outer Drive and Southfield Freeway will provide a highly visible presence with a circulation pattern that provides ample parking and articulated entries to buildings. The circular front door of the campus will include a new Welcome Center building with a “One Stop Shop” for admissions, registration, career counseling, and financial aid.  A collegiate image with vestibules for art displays and banners will provide an inviting and welcoming front door.  The Northwest Campus will continue to be the focus facility for the Health Science programs, which will include nursing and all Allied Health programs as well as appropriate laboratory space.  Student services will be located in the heart of the campus.  The design includes space for study alcoves, food service with Internet cafe, bookstore, computer commons, and learning resource center. New classrooms are located to wrap around the Student Services area and are designed to provide flexibility, expandability and wireless technology.  Large multi-media classrooms are planned for the campus.  Exterior landscaped seating areas will be provided to enhance the educational environment through student comfort.  The new campus will provide to the community the use of conference facilities and health services outreach program.

Who Performs Renovations?

  1. Depending on the scope of the work renovations are performed by skilled trade employees or contracted out.  In order to comply with laws and regulations regarding educational facilities, it is necessary that all renovations be directed through the Facilities Operations and Physical Plant.
  2. The cost of repair and maintenance of building, grounds and utilities; custodial services, planning services, space management, and construction is the responsibility of the facilities Plant Operations Department.
  3. Facilities Plant Operations is not normally responsible for the cost of purchasing, replacing and maintenance of specialized departmental equipment and renovations.
  4. Each department is responsible for the maintenance of departmental equipment.  Sometimes we have the expertise to repair the equipment at the Department's expense.  In other cases, the Department should contact the equipment vendor for the appropriate advice and/or service.
