Personal Safety Tips
The District Police Authority Department will do everything it can to prevent campus crime, but we need your help and support to make this possible. Most of the crimes that occur in the District are "crimes of opportunity." The people who commit these acts simply take advantage of the opportunity provided to them. Personal property left unattended that is stolen is the most frequently occurring example of crimes of opportunity. Each community member must make a conscious effort to minimize such opportunities and safeguard their possessions.
- Do not leave your purse, keys, backpacks, or jackets unattended in an office, a classroom, the library, or study lounges.
- Lock the doors and windows to your office whenever it is unoccupied
- There really is safety in numbers, so always go places with a friend or classmate
- Pay attention to your surroundings, especially when on a cell phone or wearing expensive jewelry and glasses
- Limit the amount of cash you carry with you
- Keep a list of all credit card numbers and the issuing company phone numbers in a safe place.
- Avoid using ATM machines at night; plan ahead and do your transactions during the day.
- Carry your keys in your hand so you can quickly get into your car or home
- Report any suspicious people or activities to a Campus Safety officer immediately
Most campus crimes can be prevented. At Wayne County Community College District, crime prevention is a partnership between the College District and you. You can prevent crime by making safe behavior part of your lifestyle.
