Work Study Hiring Process

Awarded Work Study? Here’s What Happens Next

If you have been awarded work study, you may accept or decline your Federal Work-Study award by contacting the Federal Work-Study Placement Office. If you decline your Federal Work-Study, you must submit a brief letter stating, “You would like to decline your FWS,” including your name, student identification number (A#), and phone number where you can be reached. The District Financial Aid Office will cancel your FWS Award if you do not accept or if you fail to respond to outreach attempts by the FWS Placement Office within 30 days of receiving your award.

Note: The FWS Placement Office will submit your name for cancellation of FWS funds after three unsuccessful attempts to contact you.

If you are not awarded FWS funds and would like to be considered, please complete the FWS application available on the Financial Aid webpage and/or reach out to the FWS Placement Office at (313)496-2634. If you are eligible, your award will be available on Web-Gate (under the Financial Aid tab), and you will be contacted by the FWS Placement Office.

FWS Students Seeking Employment

Once the FWS students are awarded their funds, they must attend a mandatory orientation to receive information about the program and complete the appropriate forms for employment status. The Federal Work Study Placement Office handles student placement. Instructions regarding placement will be provided during the orientation process. Once placement is confirmed, the student will receive confirmation and authorization to begin work via their WCCCD email. The confirmation email will contain the start date and will be sent to the student and supervisor.

Annual Federal Work-Study (FWS) Submission

Students must submit FWS confirmation and request forms to the FWS office. This process is necessary to ensure the safety of our students and provide guidance for proper behavior between supervisors and students. We ask that you submit these documents promptly to avoid a delay in receiving FWS placement on the first day of classes.
