Wayne County Community College District Expands Courses and Programs Across Three Campuses Focused on Electric Vehicle (EV) and Mobility Sector
New Programs to Help Grow Specialized EV Workforce and Technicians in Southeast Michigan, Supporting the State’s Growing Industry
DETROIT, Mich. – Oct. 2, 2024 – Wayne County Community College District (WCCCD) is expanding its mobility sector and electric vehicle (EV) technologies workforce development programs with new courses and stackable certificate programs. These programs are designed to prepare a highly skilled workforce for roles such as Electric Vehicle (EV) and Battery Charger Technicians.
The new courses and certificates complement WCCCD’s existing programs in Mechatronics, Robotics, Advanced Manufacturing, and Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and Truck Driving, ensuring the region’s workforce meets the demands of the growing mobility and EV sectors.
Industry Collaboration for Workforce Development
In partnership with the Rainbow PUSH Coalition and industry leaders, WCCCD has engaged an advisory board to develop courses and credentials tailored to the emerging needs of the EV market. The high-voltage battery systems and specialized parts in electric vehicles require specific expertise, which these programs will address.
“The mission for WCCCD has always been to create opportunities for individuals, communities, businesses, and our entire region to thrive through higher education,” said WCCCD Chancellor Dr. Curtis L. Ivery. “By working directly with industry leaders, we are helping advance a workforce that will drive the future of electric vehicle technology and ensure continued growth in southeast Michigan.”
WCCCD’s stackable certificates enable students to build on their knowledge, progressing through specialized training for higher-paying, more technical careers in the mobility and automotive industries.
Expanding Curriculum for the EV Industry
The expanded Electric Vehicle Program includes courses on:
- Batteries and Fuel Cells
- Charging Stations
- DC and AC Motors and Controls
- Sensors, Actuators, and Communication Systems
- Autonomous Vehicles and Safety
Courses will be available across three WCCCD campuses: Eastern, Northwest (both in Detroit), and Downriver (Taylor, Michigan). Flexible learning options, including virtual and in-person classes, will accommodate diverse student needs.
Additional Workforce Development Programs
Beyond electric vehicle technician programs, WCCCD is launching stackable certificates in Robotics, Advanced Manufacturing, and Cybersecurity, providing clear career pathways aligned with industry demands.
