Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee
Documentary Film Viewing
The film is a “powerful drama which charts the greed, racial hatred, violence, deception and injustice heaped upon Native Americans. The film deals with the final chapters of the book’s extensive history of dispossession and displacement from the land of hundreds of American Indian nations and communities that inhabited “Turtle Island” (North America) for thousands of years.
The film begins with the defeat of General George Armstrong Custer’s cavalry at the Battle of the Little Big Horn by the Sioux under the leadership of Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull in 1876. It ends with the massacre by the U.S. cavalry of hundreds of mostly unarmed Native men, women and
children at Wounded Knee on the Pine Ridge Reservation in 1890.
